2021 was an interesting year for the Spanish ecosystem.
For one, Venture Capital investment at €1.9 billion was the highest ever, almost 4x times than in 2020, according to data from Dealroom. We also saw how Spain is booming with startups that are acquiring unicorn status, 12 of them just this year, confirmed by an Atomico report.
It is also possible to see groundbreaking ideas coming from cities other than Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. For example, Málaga is beginning to develop some of the most interesting startups in sectors like gaming and agrotech.
By the end of 2021 the sectors which received the most funding were proptech, logistics/delivery and fintech. There is also an interesting initiative in Catalonia to conquer the NewSpace sector. It’s possible, though, that the most innovative up-and-coming startups are the ones going into the metaverse.
There is a lot of good news coming from Spain right now and while there is still a lot to do in terms of helping the ecosystem grow and develop, the future looks promising. One step in the right direction is that the so-called Startup Law will be ready for 2022, after much government debate.
Novobrief is taking the opportunity to present 20 tech leaders to watch in 2022. These entrepreneurs all have ties to Spain and are putting the country on the map of the most innovative companies on the planet.
