This week in Spain: new crowdfunding limits, Nubelo raises €2.5M + upcoming events

2015 is underway and the Spanish startup scene is waking up from two weeks were people’s minds are mostly focused on family and friends and not on fundraising, growing or user acquisition.

With this new section that we have called this week in Spain, we will try to showcase the most relevant stories that have happened in the Spanish ecosystem over the past week. We will share the articles that we’ve published on Novobrief but also more from other publications that compliment our coverage.

Also, at the end of each summary we’ll provide a list of the most relevant startup and tech events coming up in the country. As always, feel free to add any suggestions in the comments!

  • The Spanish government announced new limits to the amount startups can raise via equity crowdfunding: €5 million if it involves professional investors and €1 million in all other cases. (Link)
  • Barcelona-based Nubelo raised €2.5 million to become leader of freelancing market in hispanic countries. Round was led by Caixa Capital Risc and included participation of Nero Ventures and Nazca Ventures. This brings the total raised by Nubelo to almost €4 million. (Link)
  • US-born Riley Maguire spent several years in Spain, working at various startups. In his article he shared his opinion on the Spanish startup ecosystem, from an American point of view. (Link)

  • We didn’t publish it his week, but here’s the top 10 largest (and disclosed) Venture Capital investments in Spanish startups in 2014. (Link)

  • Internet TV platform MagineTV announced that it will shut down its services in Spain. The company launched a beta version of MagineTV in July. (Link – Genbeta, in Spanish)

  • FuckUp Nights (Madrid, Jan 14): entrepreneurs get together to share their failures and learn from each other.

  • CEOTalk with Simón Lee (Barcelona, Jan 14): Simón is the founder of two Barcelona-based accelerators, Incubio & GameBCN.

  • Startup Grind BCN with Philippe Gelis (Barcelona, Jan 15): Philippe is the co-founder and CEO of one of the largest fintech companies in Spain, Kantox.

  • JobFluent (Barcelona, Feb 10): the largest startup job fair in Southern Europe. Novobrief is a media partner.

  • Startup Weekend Barcelona (Barcelona, Feb 13 to 15): gaming edition of one of the most iconic startup events in the world.

  • Grow-Up Spain (Barcelona, Feb 12 & 13): for startups looking to connect with local and international investors.

  • Salón Mi Empresa (Madrid, Feb 17 & 18): for entrepreneurs, freelancers and investors. Novobrief will be there, moderating a talk between Carlos Blanco and Luis Cabiedes.
